Roof ballast is a weighted layer, such as gravel or paving, used within a designed roof system to help keep components in place.
What does this mean on your roof?
The visible weight belongs to a coordinated roof assembly. Its required distribution does not follow a general preference for more or less gravel.
Substrate, supporting structure and wind effects all matter. Removing material or gathering it into piles changes the original arrangement and is not a neutral maintenance action.
During renewal, ask whether existing ballast will be removed, temporarily relocated or reused. Record who assesses its suitability and distribution. Outlets and maintenance access should remain available. When solar equipment or a green roof is added, consider the complete load again; existing gravel does not demonstrate that any additional installation can be supported without further assessment.
